Failed Donation Attempt

Frustrated by a failed donation? Learn common reasons credit card donations may fail and how to resolve them.

We understand that a failed credit card donation can be disappointing, especially when you are trying to support a cause you care about.

When you submit a donation through Anedot, the confirmation page will first show that your charge is pending while your bank or card issuer reviews it. Shortly after, you will receive an email receipt confirming whether your donation was successful or if it did not go through. If your donation fails, the sections below explain the most common reasons this can happen and provide simple steps you can follow to help ensure your donation is completed successfully.

Common Reasons for Donation Failures

Security code or billing details did not match (CVV/AVS)

Sometimes a donation fails because the 3‑ or 4‑digit security code (CVV/CVC) or billing ZIP/postal code does not match what your bank has on file.

What to try:

  • Carefully re‑enter your card number, expiration date, CVV/CVC, and billing ZIP/postal code.

  • If it still fails, contact your bank to confirm the billing address and details they have on file.

Bank authorization or fraud checks

Your bank or card issuer may decline a donation if it looks unusual, such as a larger‑than‑normal amount, an international transaction, or a new organization you have not given to before.

What to try:

  • Call the number on the back of your card and ask if they see a declined transaction related to your donation.

  • Let them know the amount and the organization you are trying to support, then try the donation again after they approve it.

Card type or card settings

Anedot supports most major card brands (such as Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover), but some specific cards or settings may still block the donation.

This can happen if:

  • Your card is restricted to certain types of purchases (for example, some debit or corporate cards).

  • Your card has international or online‑purchase restrictions enabled.

What to try:

  • Try a different card, if available.

  • Contact your card issuer to confirm that online and charitable transactions are allowed on that card.

Security alerts on your account

In some cases, your bank may place a temporary security hold on your card, even if it is in your possession, which can block donations.

What to try:

  • Call your bank or card issuer to ask whether there is a security alert or hold.

  • Once any alert is cleared, try submitting your donation again.

Browser, network, or VPN issues

Occasionally, a donation cannot be completed due to a temporary browser or network issue, or because a VPN is blocking the request.

What to try:

  • Refresh the page and try again, or close and reopen your browser.

  • Try a different browser or device (for example, switch from mobile to desktop).

  • Turn off any VPN or ad‑blocking extensions, then resubmit your donation.
